Subject:
Their first "big" show
This show was the band's first "big" show, with the band saying "thanks for coming to our party" at the end and encouraging everyone to stick around and get to know each other afterwards. It was the CD release party for their first album and it took place at the old Oak Theatre on the corner of Armitage and Western, now a bank. I read somewhere that it was televised, now that would be a great video to watch. Great sounding show, very little discernible tape hiss.
Some highlights:
1) Can really hear the bass in the mix. Check out the beginning of "The Puppet" - Jim sounds like Phil Lesh out there!
2) I like the "freedom" jam in the middle of "The Puppet"
3) The delay on Wayne's voice in "Colors of the Light" sounds pretty cool. Wayne said "me and Rob wrote this tune" - I always thought it was just Wayne.
4) Rare guitar error by Wayne in the opening riff to "And She Cried" - whoops! Some nice acoustic work from Marty in that song around 4:20-4:25, which he played aggressively like that more often.
5) Great version of "Indian Summer"
6) "Dad's Gospel Tune" - only known recording. Too bad they never developed that tune further.
7) Wayne's soloing in "After Midnight" is phenomenal, especially the opening. Rocking!

solid oldschool FJB
Pretty cool show with some odd covers that worked out well. The recording is quite good, but there are a lot of level changes and there are some quick starts and/or cuts, probably from a tape flip (noting the date of the recording) or something along those lines. By no means is that a criticism of the tapers - just a heads up to those snagging the show.
A HUGE thanks to the tapers, seeders and posters who are getting these old FJB shows up on the archive.
